Artist Statement

I have been surrounded by the art of sewing since before I could walk. Generations of influential women in my family would share this talent with their daughters. As an infant I would sit on my mother’s lap while she would sew and embroider. These skills were not just a hobby, they were an essential way of life. Fashion design has evolved into my stress reliever, a creative way to save old clothes and fabrics when money is tight, and a way of connecting with my roots. My mother pursued her interests in sewing and fashion design through her career choices of interior design and art/art history professor. She exposed me to various forms of art and historical contexts from an early age. Every weekend we were scouring thrift shops and estate sales, or on a wild adventure somewhere looking for the” perfect” piece. We frequented museums, art galleries, and any other visual, tactile or educational experience my mother could facilitate.  This exposure piqued my curiosity about the artistic and historical aspects of fashion and couture. Our shared enthusiasm and access to a wealth of educational resources, fashion books, history, and vintage fashion garments created (and saved!) by the women in my family have fostered my passions. Art Deco and Rococo fashion particularly inspire me. The interplay of art, history, and fashion has opened my eyes to the diverse tapestry of human creativity and expression made apparent through the handwork of others over time.
